An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test is commonly used by international schools and universities to determine an applicant’s level of English. However to gain an Australian visa, you will also need to demonstrate your English abilities to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). The test may also be requested by Skills Assessors as part of the skills assessment process.
The Australian Government has also recently announced that English testing will become a feature of the Australian Citizenship process too.
The IELTS score you need depends on the requirements of your visa or your circumstances.
The General Skilled Migration program awards points depending on your ability. Currently you are awarded 10 points in the points test if you can score at least 7 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) in an IELTS test that has been undertaken in the three years immediately prior to lodging the visa application. If you can score at least 8 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) you are awarded 20 points.
